About the project

Wunderkidz is a mobile football management game developed in Unity and C#, where players take control of a youth football academy and work to develop the next generation of professional footballers.

The game combines player development, scouting, facility management, and competitive matches into a management experience designed specifically for mobile devices.

Rather than focusing on the complexities of traditional football management simulators, Wunderkidz emphasizes accessible gameplay and faster progression while retaining strategic decisions around player development and academy growth.

Player Development and Scouting

Player development is central to the gameplay experience. Players recruit young footballers through a scouting system and improve their abilities by investing in training facilities and academy resources.

Training camps focus on different attributes, including accuracy, pace, shooting, physical ability, fitness, technique, and mentality. Upgrading these facilities allows players to improve their academy's development capabilities.

The scouting system introduces another layer of progression, allowing players to discover recruits with stronger starting attributes as their academy expands.

These interconnected systems encourage players to balance investments between developing existing talent and recruiting new prospects.

Academy Management and Progression

Beyond developing individual footballers, players are responsible for managing the academy's finances, facilities, and overall growth.

Revenue generated by local businesses and other activities can be reinvested in infrastructure improvements, creating a positive feedback loop in which successful management supports further expansion.

The game also incorporates stadium customization, management decisions, and collectible player types, providing additional objectives beyond improving individual player statistics.

Match System and Gameplay

Wunderkidz includes a match system that allows players to compete against other football academies and test the effectiveness of their player development strategies.

Match outcomes introduce consequences for decisions made throughout the academy management experience, connecting player recruitment, training, and team composition with competitive performance.

The game also incorporates player personalities and management decisions, introducing additional considerations when selecting and developing footballers.

Mobile Development

Wunderkidz was originally designed around a horizontal (landscape) orientation before transitioning to a vertical (portrait) layout to support a more casual, accessible playstyle. This change required adapting the game's interface and interactions to better accommodate shorter gameplay sessions and one-handed use.

The application uses Unity and C# to support its gameplay mechanics, interactive environments, and management interfaces.

The transition emphasized presenting complex management systems through intuitive, mobile-friendly interactions, allowing players to make meaningful decisions without having to navigate the extensive menus traditionally associated with football management games.

Development Experience

Wunderkidz provided experience contributing to a commercially released mobile game built around interconnected gameplay and progression systems.

The project demonstrates the technical and design considerations involved in developing a management simulation, including player progression, resource allocation, interactive interfaces, and balancing multiple gameplay mechanics within a cohesive mobile experience.
